As a litigation attorney and mother of four children spread 5 and a half years apart, I have had my share of highs and lows in the working-parent journey. I want to share my experiences and years of research to help you avoid the traps and pitfalls I fell into, and maybe walk with me as I move forward through this journey!
Attorney Life
I got married a year before completing law school to the smartest, kindest third year law student. He has also been the best life partner. Because he was a year ahead of me in school and work, he has always been able to lead the way and help lend wise advice and knowledge. We grew up together as attorneys, and we have grown up together as spouses and parents.
We live and practice in Texas, a great state to travel across for work. It’s also the only place where I can get bluebonnets every year for my birthday! We have both handled busy civil litigation dockets–eventually ending up working for the same firm! He has worked for the same firm since leaving law school. I started in a general practice firm, handling all sorts of civil cases from fraud to slip and falls to HOA disagreements. Then I moved to a medical malpractice defense firm, defending healthcare providers who were sued for a negative outcome. Finally, I joined my husband practicing in a broader personal injury defense firm.
Mom Life
We have four children. A little boy followed by three little girls–the last two coming twelve months apart. I became a mother about two years into practicing law. It’s what I know: motherhood while litigating. I don’t always manage everything with grace and joy. But I do make it a daily goal to make sure each child knows that he or she is special and loved as an individual.
Being a mom is one of my greatest joys. I also feel called to be a lawyer. I hope to share thoughts and resources to help others who believe the working mom life is for them, as well as thoughts and resources for all moms–because aren’t we all just trying to guide our babies to the best results we can imagine?
